Great feedback on my question from Tumblr, Facebook & Twitter. Since I’m working on Crimson Spell V1 right now, how about I walk you through the production process on this book as I’m doing it (this will take months, btw)? And I’ll try to include answers to your other questions as I’m doing it. Then you can see start to finish on one book. Sound good?

I'm all for the informative posts. SuBLime's roster is heavy with well known mangaka/crowd favs. How do you balance licensing "crowd favs" vs. introducing new or lesser know authors. I noticed digital titles exclude the back cover, what's the reasoning behind that?

I think this is where digital is a nice option. We can introduce new mangaka (which we have) to see how fans react. So far they’ve all done really well and fans seem to really appreciate something new. As far as balancing, we certainly tip the scales more in the favor of what fans are asking for, but we also license books that we feel fans would appreciate knowing about to provide some fresh, new material.

As far as including the back cover on a digital title, since it’s digital, only the front cover is seen on websites where they’re sold (Honestly, now that you’ve asked the question and I’m thinking about it, I’ve never purchased a digital book anywhere that includes a back cover in the book. Not to say they don’t exist, I’ve just never come across it myself.). A print book’s entire cover can be seen when you hold it in your hand and is there as part of the marketing for the book. Basically, it serves no purpose in a digital environment as far as marketing goes.

We have a pretty full plate of Youka Nitta titles right now (Embracing Love, Starting with a Kiss, Spiritual Police). If there was something you had in mind, we can add it to the fan wish list for future consideration. :-)

Any chance at all of licensing more works by Kou Fujisaki? I love her works and it would be great if more got licensed.

The wait is finally over! SuBLime is happy to announce that we have licensed the first four volumes of the Crimson Spell series by famed mangaka Ayano Yamane! This is a license rescue as the first two volumes were released in English by another publisher.

The individual volumes will be released on the following dates:

Volume 1 - December of 2013

Volume 2 - February of 2014

Volume 3 - April of 2014

Volume 4 - June of 2014

This will be released as a print-only title. There are no digital rights available for this title at this time.

So what do you think of our latest license? Personally, as an Ayano Yamane fan, I can die happy now. :-D

Look what we got in the mail yesterday! It’s the June issue of Japan’s BeBoy Gold boys’ love magazine and look what’s on the cover AND inside! It’s the first episode of Into Illusion from Rieko Yoshihara and Ryo Tateishi. On the right is BeBoy Gold, and on the left is the 109-page bound book of the first novel/manga episode that they have tucked behind the cover of the magazine. [Correction, the Japanese version is 82 pages, OUR version is 109 pages ‘cause English words take up more space ;-)]

But for me, what’s MOST exciting is that you guys have it in English already! This is absolutely unheard of for us yaoi fans outside of Japan. If you weren’t already aware of this, SuBLime is working with Libre Publishing of Japan to simultaneously release Into Illusion so that Japanese fans and fans outside of Japan can read it at the exact same time.

We hope you check it out and give it a try so we can continue to strive toward more new and innovative ways of bringing you the best of what Japan has to offer. :-)
